What's a Drive-In Mommy?

Posted by:

The kids were asking to go see the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie.  We were debating whether to let them see it because it is rated PG-13.  Our children are very rarely afraid of anything, which is mostly a good thing, so we decided that we would give it a whirl.  Jude had already seen his first big kid movie- Earth to Echo (seen here), but this would be Joel's first people movie.

Since it is summer, I said lets go to the Drive-In.  What's the Drive-In mommy?  I tried to explain the concept of watching a movie outside, which they understood, in a car, a little more confused, and when I packed the radio, well I lost them.

So we got all the blankets, pillows and folding chairs packed in the hatch of my car.  Then got dressed in comfy clothes.  I couldn't convince the kids to get in their PJ's and truly it wasn't worth the fight.  I made sure there were batteries in the radio (yes we still own one).  And then we headed off to the Aut-O-Rama Twin Drive-In Theatre.

I used to love the Drive-In as a kid. I remember seeing one of the Muppet Movies there and it is still one of my fondest memories (although I am pretty sure I fell asleep halfway through). So as we pulled up to the Drive-In, I think I was more excited than the kids.

We found our perfect spot close to the screen, popped the hatch, got all set-up and we were ready to go. But like all good things, the movie comes with a wait. What to do? Well Steve put the radio to good use listening to the Cleveland Browns preseason game. I was a little more practical, hauling the kids to potty stops!

We of course needed to make a stop at the concession stand.  Our Drive-In no longer allows you to bring in food. (Bummer but understandable since Drive-Ins are a dying art form).  Even though you can't bring in your own tasty treats, they have plenty of options to tantalize your taste buds!  We went with your standard fare of popcorn, candy and pop to start.

I used my alone time with Jude to explain how special the Drive-In was and how a lot of kids will never get to see a movie at one. Like most five-year-old kids would do he glazed over and said "yeah mommy I know." But I continued to tell him how we need to support them so that maybe they will be around when he has kids, then I lost him yet again. So I smiled and said let's go see a movie!

We got ourselves all comfy in our spots with our yummy treats. Time for some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! All and all not a bad movie. Pretty good special effects for a kids film. Not the strongest storyline, but hey their ninja turtles that talk, are we really going for believable? I sneaked off half way through to replenish snacks with some yummy fresh made funnel cakes. Spoiler alert, when the turtles saved the day, and the last sticky powdered sugar coated finger was licked, we packed up and headed home to bed!

Overall a pretty perfect night. Like we say it had everything you need- family, food and fun, Life doesn't get much better than that!
