Sloppy Jose's

Posted by:

Spice up your next Taco Tuesday with our recipe for Sloppy Jose's. They are a cross between tacos and Sloppy Joes and they are delicious!  We serve this recipe as tacos but it is equally as good served on rolls as traditional Sloppy Joes are.  This recipe feeds quite a few people, so it is also perfect for watching the big game with family and friends.  You could always cut the recipe in half for weeknight dinners, but I prefer to make the whole recipe because the meat mixture freezes beautifully so I end up with two dinners in one.

Is your mouth watering yet?  Here we go!  And remember if you like this recipe Yum it!!

First add the vegetable oil in a large nonstick skillet on medium high heat.  Then add the ground meat and pork sausage and cook until brown.

Drain most of the fat and discard.

Dice half of one large onion.

Add onion to the meat mixture and cook for a few minutes, or until the onions begin to get soft.

Next add the ketchup, canned tomatoes with green chilies (I use mild because of the kids but you can also use the original or hot if you like extra spicy), worcestershire sauce and water.  Stir to combine.

Then add the taco seasoning (I use the lower sodium) and brown sugar.

Stir to combine and simmer for 15 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste.  If mixture is a little to thick for your liking you may add a little more water.  It will depend on how well you drain your mixed and the amount of water your vegetables let off while cooking.

Spoon meat mixture into taco shells I like crunchy tacos, the kids like soft flour tortillas because they roll up easier and are less messy.  Then top with your favorite taco toppings. We like shredded cheese, lettuce and sour cream.  Serve with chips and salsa on the side and Ole your dinner is served!

If any of the meat mixture is left, it freezes beautifully in a freezer safe container.  To reheat from frozen, thaw frozen mixture in refrigerator over night and then heat in skillet or microwave adding a little water if necessary.

  1. Call me crazy - we don't have Sloppy Joes (real ones) in Australia - and putting this on a roll seems completely random !
But this receipt looks delish and I like the idea that it is easy to freeze!
    Thanks
